The government says new powers will help stop international students from being exploited.

Data released yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the country's population surged by 2.5 per cent largely due to an increase in migrant workers and students.

From tomorrow, new powers enter force, including giving authorities the ability to suspend dodgy education providers from recruiting international students. If they fail to do so, the education providers will be suspended from recruiting international students. Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said the government has been successful in reducing net migration."Since September, the government's actions have led to substantial declines in migration levels, with recent international student visa grants down by 35 per cent on the previous year," she said.
