An eyewitness to Charu Chandrakanthan’s killing refused to co-operate with police, yet gave a detailed account about the shooting in a secret cellphone video recording. It became pivotal evidence leading to the conviction of the shooter.
As mourners gathered at Charankan Chandrakanthan’s parents’ Scarborough home two nights after he was fatally shot, his close friend stood outside giving a detailed, eyewitness account that identified the killer, albeit by nickname.
In the end, Mathuvan never aided the prosecution of Charu’s killer, at least not in his in-person testimony. “The only way to describe her is brave,” Thugeetha, referring to Varnarajan, told the Star. “I don’t think she was even thinking about her own feelings or how much pain she was in. She was more like ‘I need to get justice for my love.’”
“I was there, he’s in our hands when he died, fam, it was f---ed,” an emotional Mathuvan told Varnarajan and her cousin. Another one of the four bullets fired grazed his friend’s shoulder.“We downloaded and watched it and realized what a riveting, first-hand account it was of his friend’s murder,” Shankaran said. “It was very precise, highly detailed and something someone only could give … if they were standing there.
While Sivakumar had been a suspect, Shankaran lacked reasonable and probable grounds to arrest him. The recording linking the shooting to a man named Munkzz with a Gucci bag changed that. Crown attorney Joe Hanna offered jurors a blunt assessment of Mathuvan’s participation. “It is clear from the very beginning that Arvin did not want to be involved in the investigation regarding his friend’s death.”
