Concerns are being raised about the platform's security and privacy.
The University of British Columbia has advised students to uninstall popular video-sharing platform TikTok from their phones — and to instead use a web browser to access the app.
UBC noted the federal government has issued a ban on the use of TikTok on government-issued devices, with provincial governments following suit. Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria could not immediately provide situation reports from their campuses. What the commissioners are looking into are whether TikTok's practices are in compliance with Canadian privacy legislation and in particular, whether valid and meaningful consent is being obtained for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
