Shadow assistant defence minister Phil Thompson has lashed the federal government as 'out of touch' after it released the Defence Strategic Review on the eve of Anzac Day and on a significant anniversary for one of the combat units facing severe cuts.

Shadow assistant defence minister Phil Thompson has slammed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his"disrespectful" decision to release the Defence Strategic Review on the eve of Anzac Day.

Kapyong Day marks the anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong in the Korean War where Australian forces were instrumental in defending a key passage from falling to a Chinese military offensive, preserving the frontline and ultimately stopping the fall of Seoul. Mr Thompson said he was now hearing that some members of the armed forces were saying they did not"feel valued", as he raised concerns about the long-term effects of the misstep.

He again pointed to the proposed cuts to infantry fighting vehicles, also known as mechanised capability, asking how the reduction in tools available to the armed forces could be seen as a"boost".
