Characters from Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar share the stage with more Mickey and friends to welcome guests
The latter is one of the park’s most popular attractions. On a morning in January, to beat the hour-plus lines, I waited along with a couple hundred other Rebels for the gate to open at 8 a.m. and usher us in.
The ride isn’t exactly new—the first opened at Disney World in 2020—but it’s a hoot. Riders queue up in a movie theatre, El CapiTOON, complete with a concession stand with spilled ketchup and Mickey-, Minnie- and Donald-shaped popcorn. Fake movie posters line the walls. Once barred into our cars, we’re shuttled from scenario to scenario, encountering a tornado, a waterfall, and Daisy Duck teaching a dance class.
At 14 acres each, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios is Disney’s largest single-themed land expansion ever.Along with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, two new after-dark shows are marking the Disney centenary. Wondrous Journeys is more historical. Beginning with an image of the 1928 Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse, the show goes on to celebrate the animation studio with scenes from all 61 Disney animated films projected onto the iconic centrepiece of Disneyland, Sleeping Beauty Castle. As part of the show, Baymax, the inflatable robot from Big Hero 6, flies over the castle. On select nights, fireworks are added.
