Lack of data and fallout from Covid both hamper equal rights, and women suffer worst, says new chair of UN disability rights committee
People with disabilities are most at risk and last to be looked for in disasters like earthquakes and floods, a UN official has said.
“Covid exposed us to devastation. As if that is not enough, there are more and more issues around disasters, conflicts, health, the environment. People with disabilities, especially women and girls, [end up being the most deprived],” said Fefoame, a longtime disability rights advocate who became the first African woman to leadGertrude Oforiwa Fefoame, new UN chair of the committee on the rights of persons with disabilities.
