A showdown is on between Facebook, Google and Canada because Ottawa is finally going to force them to pay for copyrighted content. Read on.

But they may also be playing hardball because the United States, their biggest market, is watching. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar recently tabled a law called the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act to preserve small and mid-sized news organizations.

The JCPA will enable small and mid-sized news organizations to negotiate jointly with Facebook and Google for revenue-sharing arrangements and to demand arbitration if they reach an impasse in negotiations. Without levelling the playing field, democracies will face continuing carnage in professional, curated news outlets which reduces reliable information-gathering which is essential for voters, businesses, and citizens.
