Kuala Lumpur: The Penal Code’s amendment required to make stalking an offence was passed unanimously in the Dewan Rakyat today following two rounds of debate.
After the Anti-stalking Bill was passed unanimously in October last year, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ramkarpal Singh presented his case and addressed amendments recommendations in his winding-up speech. Ramkarpal said that the Penal Code Bill 2023 debated today aims to insert a new section 507 to provide for the offence of stalking, including acts that are considered an offence and to provide for a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment or a fine or both.
He said the changes in the Criminal Procedure Code Bill 2023 would help reduce the risk of crime victims being stalked, extending to them the protection currently limited to parties of a marriage. “This amendment is implemented with the aim of providing legal protection to victims of stalking crimes through protection orders issued by the court.
