A visit to a much loved beach represents a major milestone for Devarshi Deka, as he — and his loved ones — come to grips with his life now, in the wake of the alleged attack which took so much away from him.

Devarshi "Dev" Deka was allegedly assaulted in November 2023 during a night out in Hobart — leaving him in a wheelchair and with other challenges.

"It might feel like a normal weekend for you and me, but it's a significant day in Dev's life," his friend Rishabh "Rick" Kaushik said.International student Devarshi Deka had high hopes when he came to Australia. But an alleged assault has left him unable to walk, and his family is appealing for support so returning to India isn't his only option.

Mr Deka has progressed from not being able to eat with his mouth due to lack of muscle function and the risk of choking. But now he can eat somewhat normally and movement is returning to his hands. "We're trying to give him all the medications beforehand, so that he can be out there for at least a few hours, and have that wind on his face, listen to the sound, the water, all the things that he used to love."Mr Kaushik explained that Mr Deka's family did not have much financial backing due to a tendency of many families in India to "spend all the money on our children, on their wellbeing and their education".
