OPINION: French President Emmanuel Macron’s comments on his visit to China show why Australian governments were right to take the AUKUS path they have.
China has reacted to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to the US last week with predictable fury and the probing of its waters and airspace by dozens of aircraft and ships, including an aircraft carrier.
His views were a powerful argument for why Australian governments have been right to take the AUKUS path they have.A deterrent like AUKUS sets an upper limit to how much Australia, and the wider region, can be coerced. All of these countries are large economic and trade partners of China, and they all want to remain so. If they are now aligned it’s out of caution and to keep China’s geopolitical influence at arm’s length, not because they are in some conspiracy withHard Australian deterrence shared with others is not escalation, or loss of independence. It’s a rational backstop to diplomacy. Australia has not changed its one-China policy.
