Defence Minister Richard Marles has sought to defuse party tensions over AUKUS ahead of this week’s ALP national conference.
Defence Minister Richard Marles and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy have sought to defuse party tensions over AUKUS ahead ofby highlighting that the cost of deterrence was far less than that of going to war.
In an attempt to take some heat out of the debate and temper the motions, Mr Marles, a Right faction powerbroker, and Mr Conroy, a Left faction powerbroker, held a video hook-up for party members on Monday night.
Mr Marles reiterated that the nuclear-powered subs were needed as a deterrent and to protect Australia’s interests well beyond its shores, such as guarding shipping lanes in the South China Sea upon which Australia was reliant for its exports, as well as imports such as oil.
