Durham police’s deputy chief will continue in his role while he faces a deceit charge from the Ontario Civilian Police Commission .
On Friday, the region’s police services board announced that Deputy Chief Dean Bertim had been charged with one count of deceit under the Police Services Act.The board did not elaborate on the deceit charge, saying they are obligated by law to keep quiet until the hearing process begins. “The board is committed to upholding public trust and accountability for policing in Durham Region,” said board members. “It is essential that the community have confidence that police officers are held to the highest standards of ethical conduct. It is also important that the board support and defend the principles of fairness and integrity for all of its members, including its most senior leaders.
