“I remember in school being taught history,” she wrote at the time. “Not black history, hispanic, euro, arabic, south east rim, oriental and lets not forget native, white and or any other mix of races . Back then it was history. Yes, were made. Yes mistakes at both ends of the color spectrum can be noted. The key here is why in this modern age we are so driven by color of skin instead of the human element.

“To engage in meaningful dialogue with Black communities and leaders, we hope that you will continue to find space to educate yourself on the significance of Black History Month and broad issues of racial justice and equity” said Stephen Linton, a Durham District School Board trustee, on Monday. “It is only through genuine reflection and action that you can begin to repair the damage done and truly serve the interests of all constituents.

“Anyone who chooses silence is choosing to normalize hate speech and harassment and giving consent to blatant racism, homophobia, transphobia and Islamophobia,” said Nicole Emanuel, an Ashburn resident.
