The story has all the suspense of a Tom Clancy Cold War spy thriller.
Two months to the day since he led his short-lived munity against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the head of Wagner convict-mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was killed when his private business jet crashed in a wooded area, about 300km northwest of Moscow.
In any case, social media linked to the mercenary group the Grey Zone pushes the narrative that the Wagner chief died “as a result of actions of traitors to Russia”. Wagner rebel chief Yevgeny Prigozhin ought to have known his life was on the line after he called into question Russian President Vladimir Putin’s carefully-cultivated reputation as a strongman leader, writes Professor Joseph M. Siracusa. Picture: Mikhail Svetlov/Getty ImagesNot likely, as Putin bided his time, lulling his former chef into a sense of false security.
The Secretary-General, and 56-year-old Swedish diplomat, was enroute to negotiate a cease-fire between the United Nations Operation in the Congo and Katangese troops, led by its President Moise Tshombe. Whatever else Prigozhin was up to, he had called into question Putin’s reputation as a strongman leader, a reputation he built from his handling of Chechnya, and an image of that was essential for the Russian people, in the backdrop of the socioeconomic and foreign policy failure of Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union.Ironically, Russian state TV kept reports of the incident to a minimum.
“From Putin’s perspective,” she adds, “as well as many among the security and military officials, Prigozhin’s death should serve as a lesson.”
