In the face of China’s superior capabilities, it is important to build on our strengths, says Air Marshal Robert Chipman, ahead of Avalon 2023 airshow.
Australia is building up its military strength and preparedness to deter conflict, but the chief of the air force admits China has the edge over the West with the development of hypersonic missiles and their devastating potential.
Air Marshal Chipman said Australia’s other contributions to peace and stability included being the security partner of choice for regional neighbours, supporting an active US presence in Australia to help America remain engaged in the region and finally conducting operations consistent with the global rules-based order “which governs, or should govern the way in which nation states interact with each other”.
“I think China is in front when it comes to hypersonics, that would be a view shared by my colleagues around the world at the moment and that is something we are actively working to address,” he said. “It’s an emerging challenge and the US in the end have acted in a way to protect their sovereignty. And now it’s a challenge the rest of the world is attuned to.”
“Whether bombers come into our thinking... we need to wait for the DSR and the government’s response before we talk specifics on bombers.” “What we mean by that is that we will need to be able to integrate capabilities between the domains – air, land, maritime, cyber and space – and that we will be able to synchronise our activities between those domains. It is incredibly consequential.”
