Defence Minister Anita Anand says she will implement all of the recommendations of a report on sexual misconduct in the military, including transferring all sex assault cases out of the military justice system to civilian courts.

Defence Minister Anita Anand on Tuesday committed to implementing all 48 recommendations of a report on sexual misconduct in the military.OTTAWA — Defence Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday she will implement all of the recommendations of a report on sexual misconduct in the military, including transferring all sex assault cases out of the military justice system to civilian courts.

Arbour appeared Tuesday at the House of Commons National Defence Committee. She argued there should be no reason for further studies on the issue and that changing the law would give civilian police no choice but to take over the cases from the military justice system. Arbour said if Anand disagrees with moving the cases to the civilian system she should just say so, but more reports and more studies will only extend the process.

In May Anand ordered the military to start the transfer of sexual misconduct cases to the civilian system to be investigated and prosecuted. Anand is also ordering a review of the Royal Military Colleges at Kingston, Ont., and St-Jean, Que., where there have been complaints of sexual misconduct.Arbour recommended the review be independent and be able to consider whether the colleges should remain open.
