Craftsman Brendon Payne, 29, and Warrant Officer Class 2 Ryan Leslie, 40, were driving a heavy recovery vehicle in August 2021 that rolled near the Townsville Field Training Area.The crash occurred on Dotswood Road, an unsealed public thoroughfare, where the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn. Following an investigation by Comcare, the national work health and safety authority, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has filed a single criminal charge alleging the department failed in its duties under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.Brendon Payne joined the ADF the year before the fatal incident.
