About 10 others spoke to the budget committee on Friday, many of them strongly opposed to a request for additional funding by the Halifax Regional Police and more officers from the RCMP. “I think we need to expedite,” he said. “It has to be happening in a big way next year. We can’t keep going to the public and saying it’s coming.”
While it wasn’t recommended by the police board, councillors went back and forth on Friday about adding the civilian positions originally requested by Kinsella: A psychologist and an occupational health nurse and possibly tying them to several business units, not just the HRP.“I believe, colleagues, as regional councillors, that our role is to make sure all of our employees we provide support and resources when it comes to their mental health, but particularly our first responders,” said Coun.
