Putrajaya plans to abolish the mandatory death penalty for serious, cruel and premeditated crimes.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin argued that this sort of crime has a long-term negative emotional impact on the victims’ family members if those convicted are not given the death penalty.“We must take into consideration the suffering when it comes to serious crimes,” she said during her debate on the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Bill 2023 in the Dewan Rakyat.

With the amendment, the court has the discretion to apply the death penalty or imprisonment for a period of not more than 40 years. He then questioned the criteria and factors for the court to consider before it decides not to sentence a convicted killer with the death penalty.
