‘Dear John’: A womaniser, his missing wife, and the letters left behind
about 7pm that Saturday before waking for breakfast, when she says her father held a piece of paper and said his wife would not be coming back.John Clark, a Walgett baker, told police that Bowie had arrived at the RSL after 9pm for a beer, and said, “My wife said that if I went to the pub, she would not be there when I got back, and she’s not there now” before he left.
Ruth Ovens, who lived in a caravan in the Bowies’ backyard but has since died, told police she accompanied the accused back to the house where she found the first letter. The Crown alleges Bowie forced Roxlyn to write it, most likely between 7pm and 11pm or later, and was “well aware of the note” before Ovens came inside. The couple’s daughter said she was later driven by a family friend to her grandparents’ house in Killara, as her father packed up the house.
The Crown has alleged the relationship was different to Bowie’s other affairs, and “it was only Gail Clarke that he was extremely keen to form a serious relationship with”.Clarke, who is deceased, previously stated that Bowie had arrived at her home towards the end of June 1982, told her his wife had left him and suggested that he move in.
Boyd said that Bowie and Anne’s relationship was marred by screaming and violence, and also claimed that “maybe a couple of nights before” her mother Roxlyn disappeared her father shoved his dinner down Roxlyn’s top.Terracini said his client “obviously had low standards, and he had difficulty living up to them”. He said Bowie had admitted to police he had hit Roxlyn a number of times.
