A bankers are also relying on guidance from central banks, regarding where interest rates will land.

For the time being, bankers will concentrate on bringing smaller deals to investors, particularly those transactions requiring zero or little financing from debt or equity markets. With that, Mr Deeming expects a strong start to smaller transactions this year, but larger, private equity-backed acquisitions may take longer to iron out as deal makers wait for more stable capital markets.So long as volatility permeates markets, deal makers will focus on sectors such as infrastructure and mining, which benefit from strong cash flow and commodity prices.

“Private capital takes multi-year views. And if you look at energy transition funds, impact funds, they have all proliferated with distinct mandates to invest,” said Paul Rathborne, managing director and head of corporate finance at MA Financial.
