Deakin University has turned itself in to the Fair Work Ombudsman after discovering it has been underpaying casual academic staff – two years after the union first accused it of doing so.

On Wednesday, a union spokesperson acknowledged Deakin’s proposed remediation but said it had confessed to underpayments in only two schools and its action did not go far enough.“We have provided Deakin management evidence … of underpayments across the university and they need to work with NTEU to find a complete and satisfactory resolution.”Victorian universities received the highest bill for underpayment claims in the country, accused of owing workers more than $50 million.

Former and current sessional academics at Deakin, who performed marking and associated duties, are potentially affected. Dr Dylan Holdsworth has been working at Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts since 2014. He estimates he is owed about $70,000.
