Russia strikes Ukrainian capital Kyiv for the 1st time in 4 months, leaving several dead and wounded. The intensification of Russia's attack could spell a major escalation in the war.

The Associated PressDeadly Russian strikes rock Kyiv during Monday morning commuteRussia unleashed a volley of missiles on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. A Ukrainian official says at least eight people were killed and 24 others injured in just one of those strikes on the capital city.

Blasts were reported in the Kyiv's Shevchenko district, a large area in the centre of the city that includes the historic old town as well as several government offices. But the sustained barrage on major cities hit residential areas and critical infrastructure facilities alike, portending a major surge in the war amid a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive in recent weeks and raising questions about how "precise" Russia's targeting is.

By mid-morning, Ukraine's Defence Ministry said Russia had fired 81 cruise missiles, and Ukraine's air defences had shot down 43 of them. The targets were civilian areas and energy facilities in 10 cities, Zelenskyy said in a video address. "[The Russians] chose such a time and such targets on purpose to inflict the most damage," Zelenskyy said.

Or the playground? pic.twitter.com/311EHalGH6Elsewhere, Russia targeted civilian areas and energy infrastructure as air raid sirens sounded in every region of Ukraine, except Russia-annexed Crimea, for four straight hours.
