A multiple vehicle crash on the North-South expressway near Alor Gajah at 8:40pm last night claimed seven lives and injured 33 persons was caused by a tyre that had detached from a lorry trailer, reported
Vehicles involved included a tour bus, two lorry trailers, an MPV and a car, said Alor Gajah district police chief Ashari Abu Samah. Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the trailers involved was travelling in the same northbound direction as the tour bus, when the bus collided with a lorry trailer tyre that had detached and come to a stop in the middle of the highway.
“The impact of the crash caused the bus driver to lose control of the vehicle, which skidded into the opposite lane and collided with a Perodua Bezza. The collision caused the car to swerve into the left lane and hit the road barrier. The bus then crashed into another trailer and an MPV carrying a family of eight,” Ashari said.
The incident resulted in the deaths of the bus driver, a bus passenger, along with the driver and four passengers in a Toyota Estima, who were pronounced dead at the scene at KM204 of the North-South Expressway near the Ayer KEroh rest and service area . Remains of the deceased were taken to Melaka Hospital for post-mortem, and all vehicles involved in the incident have been detained and will be sent to Puspakom for inspection, Ashari said. “The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he added.Open roads and closed circuits hold great allure for Mick Chan.
