Victorian senator David Van has been expelled from the Liberal partyroom, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton revealing 'further allegations' had been brought to his attention since Lidia Thorpe accused Senator Van of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe accused Senator Van of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the Senate chamber on Wednesday evening, with the Senator explaining on Thursday that she had been"aggressively propositioned and inappropriately touched" in a parliament house stairwell.
“Since the airing of Senator Thorpe's allegation yesterday, further allegations in relation to Senator Van have been brought to my attention overnight and this morning,” Mr Dutton said. Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe alleged she was"aggressively propositioned and inappropriately touched" by Senator Van in a parliament house stairwell. Picture: Sky News Australia.
“I've advised that the action at the time that was taken was to the satisfaction of both Senator Thorpe and the Greens Senate leadership team,” he said.“Let me say this in the clearest possible terms, Senator Thorpe’s allegations are concocted from beginning to end. Nothing she has alleged against me is truthful,” Senator Van said.
He also said he had agreed to leave the Liberal partyroom to protect the Liberal Party and called for an independent investigation to take place.
