Karlo Nograles pledges to assist barangays in implementing measures to prevent dengue, highlighting the need for year-round efforts and community involvement to curb the spread of the disease.
With less than a third of Davao City 's barangays having their own Mosquito-Borne Viral Disease Task Force, former Davao City congressman Karlo Nograles pledged his support on Tuesday to ensure measures are in place to protect residents from dengue. Nograles, who previously served as the Civil Service Commission chief, emphasized that dengue remains a serious public health threat, not just in Davao City but throughout the Philippines .
According to recent reports, Davao City recorded 7,089 dengue cases and 55 fatalities in 2024, a rise from 6,784 cases and 52 deaths in 2023. Nograles stressed that every dengue death is one too many, highlighting that each case is preventable. He believes that the best defense against dengue is not solely treating those who become ill, but actively preventing infections in the first place. Given the alarming statistics, Nograles advocates for intensified efforts in eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, maintaining clean surroundings, and making Davao City inhospitable to mosquitoes. He proposes a year-round dengue prevention program rather than relying on seasonal campaigns. Nograles acknowledges that the existing 5S strategy – Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, Secure self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, Support fogging in outbreak areas, and Sustain hydration and medical intervention – is effective, but its success depends on consistent implementation and community participation. He believes that activating a Mosquito-Borne Viral Disease Task Force in each barangay is crucial for these efforts. Nograles underscores that dengue is not merely a health issue but a community concern, emphasizing the shared responsibility of every home, barangay, and business to keep their surroundings clean and free of stagnant water.Nograles also plans to assess the city's overall cleanliness and sanitation practices, evaluating their impact on the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes. He advocates for a holistic approach to managing urban spaces, emphasizing the importance of clean surroundings, proper waste disposal, and strict enforcement of sanitation measures as a daily routine, not just during dengue outbreaks.

Authorities are urging residents to manage their waste properly and vendors to dispose of waste responsibly to prevent future flooding.
