Chief executive Meg O’Neill said data centres in Singapore – which the government has insisted must provide their own green power – could be an industry model.

Woodside Energy is looking to data centres’ hunger for green power as a potential solution to the problem of finding customers willing to justify the oil and gas giant’s commercial-scale bet on green hydrogen.

“With that kind of customer, we feel like we have an opportunity to work with them to find a solution that will meet their needs and allow us to make these investments in low carbon fuels.”Ms O’Neill said Woodside was also studying the new incentives foreshadowed by last week’s federal budget – which include $6.7 billion in green hydrogen production credits at $2 a kilogram – to see if they could help bridge the gap to the generous incentives offered for low carbon hydrogen in the US.

He told reporters on the sidelines of the conference that it was helpful that the government’s future gas strategy had acknowledged gas’ role in the grid, but the capacity investment scheme couldn’t stimulate more investment in gas fired peakers because it currently excludes gas fired generation. “Can I be very clear on what this strategy has not? It bears no resemblance to the LNP gas led recovery as I’ve seen suggested,” she told the same conference.

“The mirage that was the so-called gas led recovery just put unnecessary pressure on the industry, making it even harder to have the difficult but important discussions on how different energy and industrial heat sources participate in our future economy.
