The Southsiders board felt that it had to raise its concerns about the culture and actions that were taken (or not taken) by the executives of both the Vancouver Whitecaps and Canada Soccer.
In an unprecedented show of support for athletes alleging sexual harassment, abuse and inappropriate behaviour by coaches, Vancouver Whitecaps fans may have helped spark a much-needed revolution in Canadian sports.
More remarkable is that in a sport known for hooligans, the Whitecaps’ largest supporter group, the Southsiders, not only organized the walkout, they reached out to the women to ask how they could help. In 2017, they also raised concerns when two youth in the Vancouver Whitecaps residency program were charged with sexually assaulting a teammate in the dressing room.
“If I were a predator and wanted to get access to people, sports is 100 per cent how I would go about it, especially at the amateur level,” McCormack told me this week.
