It’s millions of dollars over budget due to unforeseen delays. By now, 44 of George Pearson Centre’s 114 residents should have been settled in their new homes. Instead, only eight have been moved into purpose-built suites in the Cambie Gardens. The best estimate of when the other 36 will get there is an indeterminate time in 2023.

In August, with mounting costs related to the delays, the health authority sued Onni, seeking millions of dollars in compensatory costs and damages for the delays. Included in that were $675,000-a-month payments from April to contracted care provider Connect Partners.Article content A de-institutionalization of this scale has never been done before in B.C. Beyond that, the family-owned company has provided care and services to people with acquired brain injuries. But Sherwood admitted it has little experience dealing with complex medical needs stemming from degenerative brain diseases such as ALS.Article content

Now, Sherwood said Connect is scrambling to recover those lost wages and recruit and train replacements. Vancouver Coastal Health is also intent on recovering some of the $4 million or so that it has paid Connect so far. So Sherwood is negotiating with the health authority over repayment as well as a downward adjustment of the contracted monthly payments to reflect the reduced amount of work currently being done.

Connect is owned by Classic LifeCare — Sherwood’s family-owned company, which has provided home-care services and operated long-term care homes since the mid-1980s.Article content
