Opinion: Canada's law banning Chinese immigration was unforgivable and must be remembered. But 100 years later, Canada is no longer that country.

Sim — the first mayor of Chinese descent since Vancouver’s 1886 founding — acknowledged the suffering inflicted by the Exclusion Act as well as the rise in anti-Asian racism since COVID-19. But because we live in an open, democratic society where free speech is encouraged, we also need to guard against the misuse of history.
Among its lyrics are: “Fearless, unyielding, heroically fight. Until we exterminate all counter-revolutionaries. Mao Zedong’s flag is fluttering high!”
