A poll released by Abacus Data on Thursday has found that the UCP has a two-point lead over the Alberta NDP and that Premier Smith is attracting support.

EDMONTON—The United Conservative Party has a slight edge over the Alberta NDP when it comes to voting intentions and Premier Danielle Smith is increasing her popularity among voters, according to a poll done in early February.

While Smith’s impression on voters has improved since December — she’s up seven points, with 37 per cent of respondents saying they had a positive view of her — Notley still leads with 43 per cent in that metric. Smith seems to have weathered a litany of controversies that plagued her first few months in office. She called the unvaccinated theshe’s ever seen, brought in the Alberta Sovereignty Act which had to be changed because it gave cabinet too much power, and had social-media posts from the past dug up that were shown to be rife with misinformation.

Coletto said that Smith and the party may be picking up support from people who voted UCP in the past but were unsure about Smith personally. Abacus also asked Albertans which three issues matter most to them: the top three were cost of living , improving health care and managing the Alberta economy . Among both NDP and UCP supporters, cost of living was by far the top-of-mind issue at 64 and 72 per cent respectively.

The NDP was chosen as the party most trusted to improve health care, 43 per cent versus 35 for Smith’s UCP.
