Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo has made it very clear what will be required for a team to lure him back onto the grid.
The former McLaren driver, who was unceremoniously dropped by the Woking team last year as they opted for rising Australian star Oscar Piastri, returned to Red Bull as a reserve driver after five years away.
All drivers on the grid are currently locked up in contacts until 2024 but Ricciardo insists that fact “doesn’t scare me” as he declared what teams must offer if they are to lure him back into a car. Ricciardo’s return to Red Bull was only as a reserve driver giving him time away from the rigours of full-time driving and an opportunity to spend more time with his family and focus on personal projects.
The role as a reserve means Ricciardo works in the simulator helping with research and development more than in a car on the race track but the absence has reinvigorated his love of racing. “It took me a few laps to get going and once I did it all felt familiar again. I would honestly say in a day my confidence went from being probably pretty low to back at the levels I remember being at. It was a good day. And I think just having that time off [also] just gave me a chance to, in a way, forget a little bit of the last two years. Just go in there with a fresh mind.”
Red Bull have since welcomed Ricciardo back with open arms and team principal Christian Horner said it was “great” to have him back in their garage on pitlane.
