Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has taken aim at former prime minister John Howard for his stances on climate change during Question Time on Tuesday. “If you ever need a reminder of why this is necessary, you can go back to the prime minister during the Millennium drought,” Ms Plibersek said. The Millennium drought occurred between 1997 and 2010, when most of southern Australia experienced a prolonged period of dryness, with conditions being the worst in the densely populated southeast and south west. “Who said, and I quote, ‘the old way of managing the Murray-Darling Basin has reached its use-by date, in a protractive drought with the prospect of long-term climate change, we need radical and permanent change’,” Ms Plibersek said. “We’ve seen another outbreak of good sense today from the member for Sturt, who told the Australian newspaper that we should be delivering the 450 gigalitres of environmental water, including through voluntary water purchase.”
