Mass protests are breaking out in Pakistan following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan – which is a “very dangerous” situation yet “very typical” of Pakistani politics, says Former NSW Labor treasurer Michael Costa.

“Every time there’s a change of government there’s corruption charges or some form of punitive measure taken against the outgoing leader,” Mr Costa told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“This doesn’t surprise me and unfortunately it sets the basis for a military coup and that’s what you’ve really got to worry about in this context. “Clearly what they’re trying to do is ensure that Imran Khan doesn’t run in the next presidential election where he’s got a good chance of winning.”

'In practical terms, it's going to make it so much harder to get the projects that build wealth for all of us up and running. It's yet another disincentive to invest in Australia,' Ms Stoker said. 'If business was serious about delivering upon the purpose for which they are established ... it would not be endorsing the near-permanent change of our democracy to add an additional layer of consultation and bureaucracy. 'Complete with the ability to challenge the degree to which that consultation and bureaucracy was taken into account in ministerial decision making. 'And that's before we start talking about how repugnant it is to give different groups of Australians different rights in our democracy on the basis of their race.'
