New NPA candidate and ex-cop Harding, who ran for mayor with Vancouver 1st in 2018, said: "Four years ago, the city wasn't ready for me."

. And regardless of what overall stats show, there is certainly a perception among many Vancouverites, especially downtown, that the city is less safe now than it was a few years ago., it has seemed likely that crime and public safety would figure as bigger issues in 2022 than in recent Vancouver elections. In the 2018 Vancouver election, when most candidates emphasized housing as the top issue, Harding stood out for his talk about law-and-order.

Fred Harding ran for mayor of Vancouver in 2018’s municipal election, under the banner of a party called Vancouver 1st.Speaking Tuesday with the NPA team behind him, Harding said: “Four years ago, the city wasn’t ready for me.”When asked what, specifically, would an NPA administration actually do to improve public safety, Harding didn’t provide details but repeatedly said he would bring key people to the table to find solutions.

When a reporter asked what he would do to improve the DTES, other than talking to people, Harding replied: “When I talk about talking to people, I’m talking about bringing key stakeholders to the table. There’s been a lot of talking going on, and I’m not talking about talking because talking is getting us nowhere, we’d love to see some action. So my thoughts are that we bring people to the table that are decision-makers.
