Dally M star’s defection; Roosters recruit triggers reshuffle: NRL best 17s for 2024

It’s been almost a month since the NRL grand final which means it’s time for a way-too-early look at how every club’s best 17 in 2024.

At the other end of the ladder, the Wests Tigers and Bulldogs will have new-look spines as Benji Marshall and Cameron Ciraldo try to lead their sides off the bottom. That will be the only change to the Panthers grand final starting side, but there will be changes on the bench. Roosters recruit Fletcher Baker and Corey Jensen would then come into the 17, while young gun Xavier Willison and veteran Marty Taupau will push for a bench spot. The Storm haven’t lost any superstars with Tariq Sims and Jayden Nikorima joining the Catalans, while George Jennings, Jordan Grant and Tom Eisenhuth were all released.

However Reimis Smith was dropped at different stages in 2023 and coach Craig Bellamy could shift Coates into the centres and play Faalogo on the wing. Harris-Tavita, who shocked the rugby league world by taking the past months off to travel, will struggle to crack Webster’s 17 with utility Dylan Walker on the bench.

Panthers recruit Tom Jenkins and Enari Tuala are the other options to fill the Young void, while there will also be changes to the pack. Kennedy will return to the No. 1 jersey, but Connor Tracey played too well as his replacement to be left out. Spencer Leniu arrives from the Panthers after playing in three straight grand final victories as an impact player and at the Roosters he’ll play a similar role off the bench.

Xavier Savage got limited opportunities in 2023 with several veterans leaving, he’s expected to be handed back the No. 1 jersey in 2024.The Rabbitohs’ 2023 season ended disastrously but they’ve added a Dally M Medal winner to their squad for 2024. South Sydney also have a big battle on their hands for the vacant wing spot, with Isaiah Tass, Tyrone Munro, Taane Milne and Izack Thompson.

Joe Ofahengaue and Wiremu Greig make up the remainder of the bench as impact forwards while Sea Eagles recruit Kelma Tuilagi is a chance to feature off the bench position.James Tamou , Peta Hiku , Mitch Dunn , Ben Hampton Brendan Elliot Riley Price , Gehamat Shibasaki Cowboys coach Todd Payten has ruthlessly cut the fat after his side spiralled from third to 11th on the ladder in the space of 12 months.

That will see Josh Schuster slot in to the backrow alongside one of the NRL’s most damaging players in Haumole Ola’akautu. Corey Waddell will push for a spot on the bench after rejoining the club but Anthony Seibold’s starting side will remain largely unchanged.Star recruits Herbie Farnworth and Jake Averillo will slot into the centres and Euan Aitken earns a spot on the bench due to his versatility.Tom Flegler will pack down in the front row, with Maroons teammate Tom Gilbert at lock as he returns from a season-ending shoulder injury suffered during Origin.

Broncos recruit Keenan Palasia was outstanding in 2023 and is deserving of a starting spot in the front row. Their absence could see Max King and Liam Knight start in the front row, with Viliame Kikau and Jacob Preston the obvious starting backrowers. As it stands, Dan Russell is without a contract but is expected to re-sign and get picked on the bench after a strong debut season in 2023.
