After nearly a decade in the spirits industry, Cecilia Rios Murrieta wanted a fresh start.
She’d been known as La Niña del Mezcal, or the Mezcal girl, for the better part of her adulthood. The alias referred to her love for the process of making the agave-based spirit, which she took an interest in after a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2009.It’s why the Dallas-based entrepreneur co-founded Jas, which makes Latin American-inspired nonalcoholic cocktails.
The Jas lineup includes alcohol-free Paloma Libre and alcohol-free Mojito Fresco. Instead of alcohol, Rios Murrieta said, Jas uses extracts like ashwagandha — an evergreen shrub that can have a relaxing effect — as a base for the drinks.. Connecticut-based Athletic Brewing Co.
“We’ve been, so far, growing organically in small mom-and-pop bottle shops in Texas and also in California,” Rios Murrieta said.“I want it to be a Texas company,” she said. “So we have our production here in Dallas-Fort Worth — I live here in Dallas, so everything happens from here.” From attending business school in Virginia, to doing yoga and even taking French classes, and eventually moving back to Texas to be closer to her family in Houston, she decided to become more “present in her life.”
