A online petition started by Agassiz school bus driver Gary Lillico to make seatbelts mandatory on school buses has more than 80,000 names it.
Lillico told Postmedia he was inspired to start the petition after watching a story on CBC’s The Fifth Estate about a Transport Canada report that concluded safety features on buses were inadequate to prevent injuries, particularly in side impact collisions and rollovers.
Related “We all wear a seatbelt when we get into a car. Getting into a bus shouldn’t be different,” he said. Lillico, who has three grandchildren, plans to send a copy to federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau when it reaches 100,000 names.
