Dai Le says western Sydney residents ‘offended’ by Syria repatriations | KnottMatthew
Independent MP Dai Le has spoken out against the repatriation of Australian family members of Islamic State fighters from Syria, saying the prospect was “very hurtful” to Christian refugees in her south-west Sydney electorate.the risks involved in repatriation are relatively small
“Many of my constituents are part of western Sydney’s largest Assyrian community and they are offended by the government’s decision.” Le, who was until last week the deputy mayor of Fairfield, said she has not received any information from the government about plans to return Australians from camps in Syria.“I will be asking for a briefing so that all members of parliament can speak up on these matters in the best interest of our country’s security,” she said.
“As long as the children remain in the camps, they will continue to be exposed to efforts to recruit violent extremists,” she said.“It makes a lot of sense to have them back in Australia, where they can receive support and the opportunity to integrate into the Australian community.”
