Ahava Kálnássy de Kálnás, a Souris resident, says she and her neighbours are being evicted by landlord D.P. Murphy Inc. so the company can house Tim Hortons workers. - Logan MacLean/SaltWire NetworkSOURIS, P.E.I. — When Ahava Kálnássy de Kálnás and her neighbours opened their front doors on Jan. 6, they found a notice from their landlord.
On Jan. 6, Souris residents received a notice from their landlord that stated: “The building is being converted to non-residential use, namely staff accommodations for employees working in D.P. Murphy Inc.’s Tim Hortons Operation." "It’s just abusive. It’s an abusive use of power, and everyone’s afraid. And that’s the bottom line here."The past couple of weeks have been stressful, with eviction on Hanson’s mind all the time, she said.
“The rental office phoned me, and I told her my dilemma me having to take a place,” Harris said. “She’s going to phone me and try to get it done before . But I have no guarantees.”Beverley Harris, a Souris resident, says the only place she can move to in Souris is a government-run senior’s facility. - Logan MacLean/SaltWire NetworkWhen the neighbours got their eviction notices, they started calling local officials looking for help.
“Only if they were to change it to a hotel/motel where they would be charging per night, would they be required to change the zoning to commercial.”
