The head of the Australian Medical Association said there appears to be no 'overarching coordinated plan' to fix chronic underfunding and staffing problems in Australia's healthcare system.
Australian Medical Association President Professor Stephen Robson has warned there is"currently no compass" guiding Australia's ailing healthcare sector as it faces chronic underfunding and staffing issues.
"The need for a comprehensive public health agenda is languishing in what appears to be a very big too hard basket. The result, he said, was that Australians had been underfunded by about $8.6 billion on simple GP consultations alone. The government adopted some of those suggestions in the last Budget, but Professor Robson said more needed to be done, saying the AMA would"hold the government to this."
"Our report into general practice measured the increased demand on general practice due to population growth, ageing, increased need for visits and complexity," he said. "Australians are now experiencing the consequences of decades of neglect of general practice by successive governments."
