Manitoba\u0027s Jennifer Jones stole her way to a victory Wednesday and booked a ticket to the playoffs at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
“It was a little bit of a tight game but we found a way. We found a way to steal in the extra.”The win gave Jones and her teammates Karlee Burgess, Mackenzie Zacharias, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine a 6-1 record and a ticket to the six-team playoff round, which begins on Friday.
Scheidegger manufactured a deuce in the ninth and Jones just missed making a double to score two and win in the 10. Instead, she got one, sent it to the extra end and forced Scheidegger to attempt a tough draw to the four-foot with her last rock, which came up light. While Jones was temporarily in top spot in Pool B, her team dropped to second when Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville beat Yukon’s Hailey Birnie 10-2 Wednesday afternoon and then locked up first place with an 8-7 win Wednesday night over Newfoundland’s Stacie Curtis.
Kerri Einarson and Val Sweeting have a 6-0 record as they compete as Team Canada in the Scotties, looking for their fourth straight Canadian women’s curling championship. In Pool A, another Manitoba team is rolling along at 6-0 and has clinched a playoff spot.
