John Ochelo, Simon Lugela and Dhia Al-Hage faced multiple charges including kidnapping with a firearm and other weapons-related offences in connection with the alleged kidnapping for ransom of two Calgary men.Justice Pat Sullivan handed each of them 10-year prison terms.said Sullivan failed to explain why he rejected the argument the abductions were an elaborate scam.

Lawyers for the three men had suggested the alleged victims, neither of whom testified in the original trial, only posed as abduction victims to scam cash from their friends. But Sullivan said there was no reasonable inference on the evidence other than they confined Minhas and Bains and moved them from one location to another without their consent.Article content

The Crown’s case in the original trial relied heavily on the evidence of Erin Woods resident Matthew Baker, who testified the three accused came to his home and brought two men with them.Over the course of several hours, he said phone calls were made in which the victims were instructed to ask friends to put money together to pay a ransom.Friends of Minhas were able to put together almost $20,000 in cash to secure his release.
