Trevor Curtis posted patients' private information online after finding an unencrypted USB drive on the ground

Trevor Curtis prepares to leave Supreme Court Wednesday following his sentencing hearing. Keith Gosse/The TelegramST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Crown wants jail time for a man who tried to extort Eastern Health with a USB drive full of patients’ personal information.

Prosecutor Jeff Summers and defence lawyer Jeff Brace presented their sentencing submissions to Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court Justice Katherine O’Brien Wednesday afternoon. Summers submitted that a six-month jail term followed by 18 months of probation was a fit sentence for Curtis; Brace argued in favour of a suspended sentence, saying his client suffers from mental health issues related to longstanding trauma.

O’Brien found Curtis guilty last April of attempting to extort Eastern Health with an unencrypted USB drive containing patients’ private information he said he had found in the parking lot of the Health Sciences Centre. Curtis had told police finding the drive was like a Christmas gift, alleging he had lost his business and children due to the health authority’s violation of his rights over a 12-year period.
