Neila Blanchard was to go on trial Feb. 6 for a second time for dangerous driving that caused teenager’s death
Neila Blanchard of Parson’s Pond talks with her lawyer, Jamie Luscombe, in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in Corner Brook on Monday, May 2, 2022.CORNER BROOK, N.L. — With just a week until the start of Neila Blanchard’s retrial on a charge of dangerous driving causing death, the Crown had to ask on Monday, Jan. 30, that the matter be postponed.
Justin Hynes, 17, was killed when he was struck by Blanchard while he was walking to school in September 2017.In an email to SaltWire Network, Trina Simms, senior Crown attorney for the western region, said three Crown witnesses have medical issues that prevent them from testifying next week, so the Crown filed an application with the Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court asking that the trial be postponed.
The application was granted during an appearance on Monday and new trial dates were set for Nov. 20-24. The Crown appealed the acquittal, arguing that the trial judge made a series of errors that warranted an overturned verdict.
