Qing Ming (Tomb Sweeping Day) is a tradition believed to have been practised for over 2,500 years.
While the event falls on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, families typically perform the rites 10 days before or after the actual day at cemeteries and columbaria.
To honour their ancestors, descendants offer food, burn joss sticks and paper replicas of material goods like cars, houses and mobile phones, in addition to sprucing up graves. These rituals demonstrating filial piety provide a way to connect with one’s family history and maintain a sense of continuity across generations. In addition to tidying graves, family members often restore headstone inscriptions during Qing Ming.
Pieces of red paper placed on grave mounds are believed to protect the living and stop angry spirits from disturbing veneration rituals.People often return from other cities to perform Qing Ming rites including bringing favourite foods of their deceased loved ones as offerings. Prior to Qing Ming, people shop for paper replicas of objects such as cars, coffee machines and buildings to be offered to their ancestors.
