Unlike Chinatowns in many cities where residents have been displaced by gentrification and redevelopment schemes, Vancouver\u0027s Chinatown is unique.

“We are at a critical point,” said Louisa-May Khoo, who is an urban planner and a PhD candidate and Public Scholar at the University of B.C.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. Khoo said the report brought together information from the City of Vancouver on SROs, B.C. Housing’s lists, and details gathered by visiting spaces inside Chinese Society buildings. There are currently 12,788 units of affordable housing in 260 developments in Chinatown, Strathcona and the Downtown Eastside, of which only 23 per cent, or 2,905 units, are designated for seniors, according to the report.

“And lastly, there is a lack of culturally appropriate care for Chinese seniors, where they get served Chinese meals, have a bit more cultural programming, more attention to Chinese cultural beliefs in terms of health care,” said Khoo. Harmony House, the only dedicated assisted-living facility for Chinese seniors, has residents waiting from six months to a year for spaces. Some residents at two long-term care facilities — Villa Cathay Care Home and Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home — have had longer wait times of around two years.
