The federal opposition leader is proposing a new offence to clamp down on the growing trend of “posting and boasting”, which police in Victoria, NSW and Queensland are worried is spawning copycat offending.

Young offenders who post videos of gang violence on Snapchat and TikTok to boost their notoriety will face jail under new federal laws proposed by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton in a bid to elevate suburban youth crime onto the national political stage.Dutton, a former Queensland policeman, said the federal government was not traditionally involved in dealing with street crime but needed to step up and show leadership to assist state authorities and protect nervous families.

“Youth crime is out of control in many parts of our country and more needs to be done to combat it,” Dutton said in a written statement ahead of Thursday’s announcement. “The problem is getting worse, and it is time to get serious on young criminals who seek to highlight their criminal activity on social media.”

The opposition will next week propose a private members bill, modelled off a draft bill floated by opposition backbencher Garth Hamilton, in an aim to put pressure on Labor to debate youth crime in Canberra.showed crime was a growing concern among voters. The proportion of voters who selected crime and social order as the issue they prioritised increased by 8 percentage points and sat behind the cost of living, housing and healthcare.
