The Canucks’ playoff dream is almost certainly dead after losing to the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Getting swept in a season series against a playoff race rival is one way to ensure spectator status for the NHL post-season.
The Canucks, losers of a 3-2 shootout in Denver on Wednesday, actually controlled much of the play through the first half of Thursday’s game, but Richardson and the Coyotes were just more clinical with their chances. Do the math: the Coyotes ended up plus-7 in points and now they’re four points up on the Canucks, with a game in hand.
The Canucks may have played more interesting and entertaining hockey this year than in recent seasons, and they may have a thrilling rookie in Elias Pettersson and maybe another on the way shortly, but to be able to say they’ve progressed, they need to be able to point at final results.Four yowls for an ex-CanuckTo think Richardson only scored three goals all of last season is a bit wild.
The third came as he was the trailing on a three-on-two, unchecked by Brock Boeser. He buried the puck past Demko. The big threeIn what was clearly the biggest game of the season, the Canucks didn’t get much from their top two centres or their best winger. The Canucks have many quality shots with Pettersson on the ice, but it didn’t feel like the characteristically dominant game from The Alien.
