Health Minister Adrian Dix says Cowichan Tribes companies can now work on the new Cowichan hospital, but the First Nation says it hasn’t been informed of any changes
Cowichan Tribes is in negotiations to lock down work for band members on the Cowichan Hospital replacement project, after protesting that its Khowutzun Development Corp. and member-owned companies have been shut out for months.
“In the meantime, our companies and their workers are sitting on the sidelines watching the clock run out on any meaningful participation on this $1.45 billion project,” she said. John Coleman, owner of Jon-Co Contracting, a member of the development corporation, said that late last year he was told he could not continue work because his company is non-union. His firm had been clearing land for the new hospital.
Dix said the matter is “fairly straightforward and clear,” prompting B.C. Liberal MLA Mike de Jong to respond: “If what the minister was saying — is saying — was true, John Coleman wouldn’t be sitting here — he’d be back home working on the project.”
